Club History

The club was officially chartered by Rotary International on 28th December 1978 with 22 members and Kevin Heinze as the first Honorary member. It was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lilydale and and the presentation of the Charter took place on Wednesday 21st February 1979, with then District 980 District Governor Bruce McKenzie presiding.

In true Rotary fashion, the members threw themselves into community work. They helped the Scouts build a toilet block at Wishart Lodge, helped at the Lilydale and Yarra Glen Shows, and helped the Salvation Army build and landscape a Halfway House in Mooroolbark.

Over the years the club has been involved in a variety of Rotary and community projects in and around the local area. The most high-profile one was the house built and raffled in Chirnside Park – the profit from that was invested and still funds a variety of youth activities and support.

Our history remains part of today’s activities and service. Our current annual Rotary Community Service Award is named after Kevin Heinz and the Rotary Youth Programs are still funded from previous fundraising. The local Yarra Ranges Rotaract Club has been operating since 2011.
